Petition launched for reopening of north Cumbria railway station
Last updated at 15:52, Friday, 20 April 2012
A railway station which closed in 1959 should reopen.
That was the view being expressed in How Mill, near Brampton, as a campaign to have it reopened was launched.
Locals would like to use the train to commute to Carlisle, where many of them work.
They were joined at Saturday’s event by Rory Stewart, MP for Penrith and the Border and Harry Cain, Conservative Carlisle City Council candidate for Hayton.
Mr Stewart said a railway service would help residents deal with rising fuel and living costs.
“How Mill Station was – and has the potential to be again – a great example of a rural service that fulfilled many roles: not only was it of major importance as a rural transport hub, it doubled as a livestock mart and transportation point, and was a focal point for the village,” he said.
Mr Cain added: “We have now formally launched a petition to support the reopening of How Mill Station.”
