New Tebay course record set by Border City Wheeler ace

Exercising his uncanny ability to peak for just a single event each season, Howard Cain made the trip to Tebay worthwhile last Wednesday by taking victory in Border City Wheelers’ evening 10-mile time trial and re-taking the club’s course record in the process.
Not that he had left anything to chance – the previous week, the Brampton ace rode a reconnaissance trip over the pan-flat Tebay course to be sure that everything was in order.
At the finish, Howard’s 22.03 was seven seconds clear of runner-up Tom Walker, though neither rider came close to the time of visiting rider Alistair Robinson.
With the testers down at Tebay, local road racers travelled north on Wednesday evening to compete in the final ‘League International’ handicap race of the season at Bridekirk near Annan.
After a thrilling race, which saw no fewer than 13 Wheelers in action, it was local lad Giles Harrison (Activ Cycles) who took the win ahead of ex Scottish junior champion Martin Loney, with Dave Crawley third. Adam Pratt was top of the non-podium finishers in fourth and from there, the result board was peppered with Cumbrian riders, all having enjoyed a great evening’s racing.
Combining a week’s holiday with a superbly organised sporting event, two young Wheelers recently returned from riding the European Youth Tour Stage Race at Assen in the Netherlands.
Joseph and Anna Armstrong were the two lucky youngsters experiencing the fantastic cycling life on the Continent, with Anna coming away with a well deserved third overall after six days of hard racing. Well done to both of you.
Following cancellation of the midweek Tiffen Cup event in July, Border City Wheelers have decided that this long-standing trophy will be awarded to the fastest club rider on handicap at the final Club 10 of the season at the Crown Inn on Wednesday.
Riders who have competed in club events already this season will automatically be given a handicap time for the evening and the organisers want to make it clear that the event will start promptly at 6.30pm to ensure completion by dusk.
The Border City Wheelers AGM will take place at 7pm on Wednesday, October 6. Any motions for the agenda must be submitted in writing to the General Secretary no later than 28 days prior to the meeting.
