- MAKE TESCO & ASDA BANANAS FAIRTRADE - ACT NOW
We need you to call on Asda and Tesco to protect the poorest farmers and workers from the UK’s banana price wars by going Fairtrade. Over the past 10 years, the price supermarkets charge for our loose bananas has halved, whilst the cost of producing them has doubled, leaving many banana farmers and workers caught below the poverty line and facing tough everyday decisions that no-one should have to make – like the choice between feeding their families, paying for medicine or sending their children to school.
Asda and Tesco are two of the biggest bananas sellers in the UK and major players in these price wars.
Send a message now and ask them to give assurance that their pricing strategies aren’t damaging farmers and workers by turning their bananas Fairtrade.
Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and The Co-operative have already acted to give their customers confidence– 100% of their bananas are Fairtrade certified. Yet Asda and Tesco still lag a long way behind. Less than 10% of their bananas carry the FAIRTRADE Mark – the best independent assurance that those who produced them were protected from the pressure of low prices.
We need to know that farmers and workers aren't paying the price for our cheap bananas.
Asda and Tesco are negotiating their banana contracts right now so it’s important to act quickly.
Send your message now.
Thank you, Jonathan Smith
Head of Campaigns, Fairtrade Foundation

- CHRISTINE'S HENS ARE HELPING FAIRTRADE
HEN owner and member of Brampton Fairtrade Town Group, Christine Lloyd keeps hens as a hobby and they provide more eggs than she can use. So she decided to sell the eggs and deposit the proceeds in an account with Shared Interest, a fairtrade lender based in Newcastle which lends money to projects overseas. “I put any money from the sale of the surplus eggs into the Shared Interest account to help producers in developing countries who may also be keeping hens and who would not have the opportunity to get loans. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world ,” said Christine. “I opened the Shared Interest account with £100 and top it up with the sale of the eggs. I don’t make a great deal of money from the eggs, but it makes me realise that if this was the only way I had of making a living then I wouldn’t be able to afford the luxuries in life we all take for granted. “ I know that while my money is with Shared Interest, it is being lent out time and time again to fairtrade projects in the developing world to help them grow their businesses and provide an income for their families and benefits to their communities,” said Christine. Patricia Alexander, managing director of Shared Interest said: “We rely on people like Christine to enable us to carry out our work and in the last 12 months we were able to lend £40m.” To learn more about Shared Interest Banking, visit www.shared-interest.com
