- MAKE FOOD FAIR
Despite producing about 70% of the world’s food, over half of the world’s hungry people are smallholder farmers themselves who struggle to earn a decent livelihood from their crops.
Starting in Fairtrade Fortnight 2013, we launched a major new campaign, Make Food Fair, to tackle the injustices in our broken food system.
The first target for the campaign will be government, who can bring about greater international commitment to give smallholder farmers a voice and ensure they can earn a decent livelihood from the crops they grow.
Please support the campaign today by signing the petition at fairtrade.org.uk/gofurther.

- CHRISTINE'S HENS ARE HELPING FAIRTRADE
HEN owner and member of Brampton Fairtrade Town Group, Christine Lloyd keeps hens as a hobby and they provide more eggs than she can use. So she decided to sell the eggs and deposit the proceeds in an account with Shared Interest, a fairtrade lender based in Newcastle which lends money to projects overseas. “I put any money from the sale of the surplus eggs into the Shared Interest account to help producers in developing countries who may also be keeping hens and who would not have the opportunity to get loans. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world ,” said Christine. “I opened the Shared Interest account with £100 and top it up with the sale of the eggs. I don’t make a great deal of money from the eggs, but it makes me realise that if this was the only way I had of making a living then I wouldn’t be able to afford the luxuries in life we all take for granted. “ I know that while my money is with Shared Interest, it is being lent out time and time again to fairtrade projects in the developing world to help them grow their businesses and provide an income for their families and benefits to their communities,” said Christine. Patricia Alexander, managing director of Shared Interest said: “We rely on people like Christine to enable us to carry out our work and in the last 12 months we were able to lend £40m.” To learn more about Shared Interest Banking, visit www.shared-interest.com
