A New Kind of Committee

There are many enthusiastic individuals in Brampton and the surrounding areas who would love to help organise events, but due to busy lives, work, or family commitments can not realistically afford the time to go to committee meetings.
When events are organised by a committee there are meetings on a regular basis where decisions are made and usually only a handful of members attend. This makes it hard to organise things or make decisions quickly and after the success of the ‘Play-Dates’ organised to help out with the teachers strikes, it became clear that social networking and the internet may be the way to speed things along.
Recently people from different groups, organisations, and many individuals have expressed an interest in forming an events committee, which will have meetings, but most of the planning, discussions and decisions can be made by sharing documents and e-mails between members.
With the help of the Parish Council, Brampton & District Business Association, Community Association among others this idea could work well, while using ‘People Power’ to create real community events.
The recently cancelled Brampton Festival could easily have been saved if all of those who stepped forward after it was cancelled had been involved in the planning.
There are a group of people ready to pull together the biggest family festival this area has ever seen, it will be open to everyone to participate, it will be non-profit, local children’s groups will be able to have traditional stalls to raise funds for their own groups.

A message of support came from Rev. Andrew Longshaw of Brampton Methodist Church when the Festival was cancelled.
"I was so sorry to hear that yet another festival has been cancelled. The opportunities these events can offer are essential to this town and could stimulate trade and interest. I fully understand the impact of the recession on many but to come alongside people and bring them entertainment at such a time is what is needed to lift their spirits. I would be willing to serve on any events committee looking at social events in Brampton."
If we have the support of the main organisations, the community and the Church we should be able to provide some fantastic opportunities for all involved.

I agree that something needs to be done to bring all the different groups together who are trying so hard to make Brampton an interesting place to live.
I would be happy to help with planning and organising events through social networking. I have secretarial skills too which may come in handy.View all 4 comments on this article

Brampton has a number of groups working towards fulfilment of their purpose. In most cases this includes action to benefit the community. The question for me is this -is there co-ordination of these groups so that common purposes are not overworked and thus time and effort wasted? I have been looking at a scheme known as Action for Market Towns. You can check it out here - http://towns.org.uk/about-amt/. This allows input into one common plan, that would provide co-ordination, reduction in effort and make positive results more likely.
