The youngsters, from Lees Hill Church of England Primary School, near Brampton, queued up to touch and have their photograph taken with it. They made a £1 donation to charity for the privilege.

It was brought into school by Emma Goodchild, 18, who carried the torch into Carlisle for its procession through the city last month.

She sufferers from cerebral palsy but remains a keen sportswoman and is a wildcard entry for the Boccia England National Championships.

The school playing fields were too wet to use so the children competed in the hall, in school grounds and in a nearby nature reserve. Teacher Caireen Bouch said they enjoyed doing their day differently.

The way the day was organised was also different. Normally the pupils are split into two teams but this year they were in four, representing the parts of the United Kingdom making up Team GB.

They were presented with gold, silver and bronze stickers to celebrate their success, and received UK Athletics certificates.

In total, the school of 43 pupils raised £60 for cerebral palsy charities at the event.
