Brampton pair named ‘best local bobby’ in national awards

Two crime fighters have been named heroes of the countryside for their efforts to tackle rural offences.
Police community support officer Tracy Watt and volunteer special constable Susan Holliday were jointly named Best Local Bobby by experts deciding the winners of national awards.
Judges at the Country Crime Fighter Awards said they were particularly impressed by their efforts with Farmwatch schemes – where farmers report suspicious activity – in and around Brampton.
They have also worked on a quad motorcycle-tagging programme that has led to several stolen bikes being found.
The Country Crime Fighter Awards, established by rural insurer NFU Mutual, aims to reward great examples of crime prevention in Britain’s countryside.
PCSO Watt said: “It’s great to be recognised for our good work.
“Most of all we hope we can inspire more people, both within the police force and among the public, to think of new ways we can work together to prevent crime.”
The two were presented with trophies at NFU Mutual’s headquarters in Stratford-upon-Avon and received a £1,000 cheque to support anti-crime schemes in Cumbria.
Sergeant Sue Jamieson, from the police squad covering Brampton, nominated the pair.
She told The Cumberland News: “They both go above and beyond what they are expected to do.
“Susan gives all her time as a volunteer and Tracy has got a real interest in Farmwatch. She changes her days off and comes in in her own time.
“What they’ve done has led to a big increase in confidence in the farming community and a big reduction in crime.”
Richard Percy, NFU Mutual chairman, added: “They’re a prime example of real commitment to the reduction of countryside crime.”
The two have previously been given an award by Cumbria’s High Sheriff for their success with the Farmwatch scheme.
The Best Local Bobby award at the Country Crime Fighter Awards was one of four categories.
Hints and tips from winners will be put together and will be available later in the year on NFU Mutual’s website.
