Shoppers need not head to the big cities to find a winter wonderland of goodies to buy this Christmas as three friends are creating their own festive market right just up the road from Brampton.
Tricia Meynell, Linda Watson and Jenia Gorfunkel are launching the Artisans’ Market at Talkin Tarn, Brampton, this weekend.
The market, selling unique handmade gifts crafted by the women and others, will be open daily, from 10am to 4pm, from Saturday, November 15 until Sunday, November 23.
The women have staged exhibitions together for some time to showcase their work, often alongside other artists.
They decided to make the collective official by launching the Pennine Artisans group.
And the friends have a lot in common – they all work from home while juggling young families.
Tricia is a photographer from Castle Carrock, Linda is a sculptor from Farlam and Jenia, also from Farlam, works with recycled glass.
They decided a Christmas market would be the best place to display their work and give locals and tourists a chance to pick up unique gifts.
They have teamed up with other artists to sell their work at the Talkin Tarn boathouse.
They include textiles company Oo, which makes bags and other products from Herdwick wool, and ceramics from Laurie Bateman, of Carlisle.
A firm from Maryport which makes handmade chocolates will also take part.
The market follows the success of a smaller-scale event at the boathouse back in May.
Tricia added: “I hope people will drop in when they are passing on the hunt for original Christmas gift ideas, and everything is locally produced so there is no carbon footprint.”
